What is an Occupational Safety Card (OSC) and why do I need it?

The purpose of OSC training is to make workplaces safer. In Finland in 2024, a total of 115,000 workplace accidents occurred, of which 24,000 were commuting accidents. The number of workplace accidents has increased after several years of decline, which highlights the need to pay more attention to occupational safety.

The Occupational Safety Card® training is designed to prevent accidents and increase safety in the workplace. The card certifies that the employee has basic knowledge of the hazards of the work environment, risk assessment and occupational safety principles. The training prepares employees to detect hazard situations and prevent accidents in shared workplaces.

The card  is valid for five years, after which it must be renewed. The safety card is particularly useful for various professional groups, and it is recommended or even mandatory for some jobs.

WHY DO I NEED A SAFETY CARD?

Many purchasing companies in Finland require the the Occupational Safety Card (OSC – Työturvallisuuskortti) from their subcontractors’ employees. Hence the card is either necessary or at least beneficial to get more job opportunities at Finnish worksites. To get an OSC requires successfully completing the Occupational Safety Card training (7-hour course + safety card exam). The safety card is valid for five years.

The OSC  training was developed to improve the occupational health and safety of shared workplaces.

The intended goals are:

  • to improve practical cooperation between purchasing and supplying companies in shared workplaces
  • to support job introduction in shared workplaces
  • to provide basic information related to occupational health and safety
  • to reduce overlap in training provided by different purchasers
  • to increase interest and motivation regarding the occupational safety skills of the company’s own personnel
  • to reduce workplace accidents and hazardous situations
